Graduation day: Storytlr 1.0 is here !

Dear storytellers,   This project has been quite for a few months. This is a fact of life in open source projects, some developers are too busy, others decide to move on. Yet, while @alardw and myself where away, the community kept on developing new plugins and awesome features (like a one cl...

Bummer. Now anyone wanting to use this has to hire and expert.

I think advocates for open source are really advocates for consulting services. You either grok it or hire someone who does.
Comment by danieldevine on 21 Jan 10 at 1:12 CET
khurt this is a newly open source piece of code so of course it has rough edges on the installation.
After a few bugs have been fixed it should be a simple case of extracting the files from a .zip and following 6 simple instructions!
I have installed it at my site at ddevnet {dot} net (there are too many spammers here to safely just give you the normal URL).

Also, because of the way Storytlr works if I wanted to set up an instance and invite random people I easily can - I could even convert my current site to be a multi-user install in just a minute of work!
Comment by khürt on 21 Jan 10 at 20:31 CET
@danieldevine

I can compile my own Apache, perl and PHP with OpenSSL etc from source ... and yet after a week screwing with storytlr I don't have a working install. The storytlr discussion group has not helped much with information either. I hope you can understand my frustration.

The title says it all, we have decided to stop operating Storytlr in 10 weeks, on December 31st 2009. The reason is simple: our lives have moved on, kids were born, house were bought, new projects appeared and we don't have time anymore to operate this service properly.   We have spent the la...

That of yours was a nice experience (also for us) !

But the service was just half of what was really needed to explode ;-)

Hope, that all this work will not be lost.

Is it anyway to have a "storytlr package" for everyone's server ?

What about, a Public subscription at Brussels Betagroup level, to keep this service alive ?

If you need help, I'd be glad to give a hand (or two) ;-)

Grazie di tutto !

It's very sad to learn your decision, but it's yours and we must respect that,...

but I use storytlr from almost the begining, I encourage you (not that much, every day I clapp my hands for you... ) from the beginign and now I'm a bit lost,...

lost because when you go this summer for the google dev. summit you were very excitited and us too,...!

we have wainting for 3 moths for a feedback of this experience and any improvement of the service with new features etc,..

but nothing came, what's happen ?

so you stopp,... it's your decision, must respect that but today I didn't really understand why you do that,..!?

thers is no services like this one, who can merge all data since there creation date and not since from the use of the service,... nobody can do that,...!

swurl, sweetcron, soup.io, posterous, tumblr, no one have your force !!

This services was THE perfect landing page for a full curriculum vitae of experiences/ life on the web.

what we are going to be now, our data will spread, again, trought the all web and like homeless people 2.0, we will wander throught this brutal 2.0 services world

good luck for the futur, hope the project bring you all you have research and can serve you for do much and come back :-P

thank youy guys !!

I am Fully devastated. You have a very good, well designed product. Why stop it that way? And BTW, my wife is about to deliver our 3rd child, so I know they are time consuming, but not a good reason to destroy such a great tool ... Don't you want to try to start a subscription based service ? even minimal one like the maintenance of today system ?

Comment by irregularshed on 26 Oct 09 at 9:42 CET
Yep, sorry Joris - without elaborating you're not going to pique my interest.

Instead I've started knitting my own system using Tumblr, Yahoo! Pipes and Disqus - all services with sufficient size and backing for me to feel safe. Having lost Swurl and now Storytlr I'm not going to leap into bed with an anonymous start-up.

Interview of @eschnou at Google I/O

As you know, I went to San Francisco for a week in May, on invitation by Google to demo Storytlr at I/O. Here is a short interview they did during the conference. This way, you can now put a face on Storytlr (the other face, the one of Alard, is missing as he wasn't able to join me at I/O).

Comment by Pierre-Olivier Carles on 22 Jun 09 at 9:43 CEST
Interesting points of view... specially the part when you explain that scalability is not that easy to plan :-)
Comment by blog on 25 Jun 09 at 20:36 CEST
Hi PO, thanks for stopping by :-) Indeed, scalability is tough but our biggest mistake is not to have planned for internationalization from the start. Just adding a small library and following a few convention would have made all the difference. Today, if we want to translate, we have a huge refactoring task ahead of us. Not fun :-(
Comment by pierreoliviercarles on 26 Jun 09 at 4:50 CEST
My pleasure... You know I love Storytlr :-)

Do you really need to translate now ? Why not keeping on going improving the service and bringing it to a even higher value for the user... and then consider internationalization later ?!? It would have been better to think about it at the very beginning... but now, as it's too late, will it make a big difference ?

PS : And by the way, may be you could fix this tiny bug-feature-breakingballs thing ? :-)
http://skitch.com/pcarles/biubu/storytlr-blog-interview-of-eschnou-at-google-i-o
Comment by eschnou on 26 Jun 09 at 5:01 CEST
Ho no we don't and we are not working on it. However, if I had panned things right in the begining, today I could just ask my mother to translate the assets and it would be done.

PHP for example has excellent internationalization frameworks, but you must use them from the start.

I think that many US based projects simply don't do this. This is one reason why going international is a pain for them. Refactoring would be too costly.

PS: Thx for the bug, had actually never seen or heard complains on this. Will fix asap.

Kinda disappointed by the post by e-mail. Was hoping it would be the same standard set by Pixelpipe and Shozu for uploading pictures by e-mail... but it's not. Also the BIGGEST part missing from Storytlr right now is to blog by email... or ANYTHING... without having to log in. No xml-rpc support.. not even just Subject=Title, Body=Body type of post submissions. Really sad. I'm thinking all the excitement about being invited to the Google conference will totally eclipse any further development in anything for some time. I'll just have to sit and wait. Or look around at other services....
Comment by eschnou on 23 Apr 09 at 16:58 CEST
Hi Robert,

Post by email works great for most of our users, so you must be experiencing an issue (although I don't see errors in my logs). Maybe due to a Japanase charset or something like that ?

Please send us an email to support at storytlr.com with details of what goes wrong.

Thanks !
Comment by pacificit on 23 Apr 09 at 17:03 CEST
Heh. If I used the extended character set I wouldn't be concerned, but I don't. Posting pictures (in the unstandard way) does work. That's not an issue. Straight blogging simply doesn't. I'll pass this on to support. Thanks!
Comment by eschnou on 23 Apr 09 at 17:08 CEST
Actually, we normally support extended charset, so that should even work. I use french accents in my posts and it works great. I'm looking forward to your email to we can start helping you.

Worth trying with another email provider as well to have more data points. Thanks for helping us debug this !

A word on data portability, backup, reliability, and our upcoming release

Hello everyone,   If you have been following lifestreaming related news, you must have seen that this week was tough week for lifestreaming services. As Mark Krynsky points out in his post, Swurl has closed, Profilactic is looking for a new home, and Dandelife is refocusing. Mark also raises ...

Some of the best projects I've ever seen have started non-funded. The more a community can help, the better a project and the community can be.

I've tried different lifestream services and Storytlr is by far my favorite. I even set up custom domain because I plan on keeping my lifestream here. It is unsettling, indeed, to think that a service we rely on could simply vanish (I was using Swurl before... - enough said). I like Storytlr better than Swurl, though, so I do hope you guys stick around. :) You're doing a wonderful job! Thanks for this post.

We've moved ! How do you like our new home ?

Hi storytellers !   As you may have noticed, we've suffered from performance and reliability issues in the last weeks. This is normal, we are young and growing fast. When we wrote our first line of code, it was to support our personal pages; today we also do it for a few thousands friends :-)...

I really enjoy Storytlr, but also I've found FriendFeed which is rather similar (without the storytelling angle) in pulling in feeds from various sources together. . .but like twitter it can be from various people. I think the storytelling gives you an edge there but just to see what others are doing I mention it. Best of luck and wishes, and hopes for more different types of feeds. . .

You can't be right all the time !

Today we tried to push a new release live, our goal was to introduce a new caching layer and set of SQL optimizations on which we have worked for the past weeks. Unfortunately, things did not go as planned.   A few minutes after being live again, we started to see strange effects on the datab...
